Who We Are

The Manner sits on a quiet tree-lined street in Soho, twelve floors rise above the neighborhood’s storied lofts, boutiques, and galleries. The name derives from the particular manner of hospitality, one that feels more like staying at the home of a dear friend than at a hotel — discreet, refined, generous. Our hotel has 97 rooms and suites with four distinct F&B concepts led by acclaimed chef Alex Stupak. The street-side seafood restaurant The Otter and second floor cocktail bar Sloanes. While our hotel falls under the Standard International umbrella, it will be positioned as a wholly distinct and separate concept from The Standard with a different market positioning, design aesthetic, and service culture.

Job Purpose:

The Barback is responsible the successful service and support behind our bars. The barback works closely with the bartenders, ensuring the bar is always prepared for a seamless operation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in clearing the bar counter to ensure they remain free of dirty/empty items.
  • Retrieve bread/pepper/salt for bar diners so bartender can stay stationed behind the bar.
  • Refill guests’ water glasses as needed.
  • Assist in bussing/support duties at the bar, at the direction of management, to ensure that all guests receive excellent. service regardless of business volume
  • Acknowledge all guests with eye contact and a smile, being able to answer questions when able – if not, follow through to find the appropriate employee to respond to guest request.
  • Confirm and stock pars for all liquor, wine, beer, and n/a beverages at start of shift (see separate par sheet) and replenish as needed throughout the service and at end of shift.
  • Keep the bar stocked with appropriate glassware, silverware, and plates to serve the guests.
  • Assist bartenders in replenishing/cutting any beverage garnishes needed for cocktails.
  • Clean/wipe down bar counter and refrigerators and coolers at the bar every night and as needed.
  • Keep the bar organized and tidy.
  • Replenish coffee and milk products for the coffee area at the bar.
  • Sorts and removes trash from bar area, places in designated areas in the back of the kitchen.
  • Assist in removing bar mats, espresso dump box, and drip coffee urns.
  • Conduct thorough breakdown and cleaning of bar area at close of shift.
  • Clean up any broken glass or spills throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work efficiently, maximizing each trip to/from bar.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the bar and prioritize accordingly.
  • Ability to learn and remember details about our products and be able to use that knowledge to stock the correct items.
  • Assist with batching cocktails and syrups, ensuring all recipes are followed exactly and labeled with preparation dates and initials. 
  • Track batch and syrup inventory, noting when items need to be replenished or replaced. 
  • Check that all bar stations are stocked with garnishes, consumables, batched martinis, and batch items. 
  • Organize items for ease of use during service, ensuring a clutter-free environment. 

 

 

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

  • 2+ years’ experience in upscale restaurant, previous serving experience required.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and carry out instructions according to established procedures
  • Fluent in the English language, write, read and speak. Bi or Multi-lingual preferred.
  • Work efficiently, utilize multi-tasking, prioritize tasks.

Physical Requirements :

  • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 lb. without assistance.
  • Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift.
  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.
  • Remain in stationary position for extended periods of time

Compensation: Hourly ($16.50) plus tips
